Burial in a new tomb
You can opt for the purchase of a new tomb, or you could be eligible for municipal land.
The purchase of a new tomb
The purchase of a new tomb (= new burial concession) can be made in the cemetery of your choice for 1, 2 or more people, each with a minimum of 10 years (due to the legal requirements) and a maximum of 50 years; according to your wishes or budget
The applicable rates and mandatory concession duration are drawn up by the village, municipality, or city of the chosen graveyard and may, therefore, differ from one place to another. Perpetual burial concessions no longer exist and have been replaced by 50 years with renewal options for another min. of 10 years and max. of 50 years!
Attention: If you choose a graveyard and this falls outside the official residence of the deceased, the relevant municipality, city or village will charge you an additional tax (= non-resident tax), making the total purchase price of the grave more expensive than for their inhabitants!
Funeral director Haerens must always, both residents and non-residents, request a ” Permission for burial” from the relevant municipality. Upon acceptance, your dearly deceased is officially accepted in the graveyard of your choice and this for perpetuity or minimum until the end of the burial concession.
After the funeral service, you will receive a payment request and an owner form (= concession form) from the municipality/city that you, as the owner, should store away safely.
The owner of the tomb is often the partner, if still alive, or someone else who’s still alive, subject to the approval of the other family members. He/she will be responsible for the payment of the purchase or extension costs of the tomb, regardless of how this is handled amongst themselves, and will be responsible for the maintenance of the tomb.
Attention: In the event of a request for an additional burial, the tomb can never be opened without permission of the owner if it is not described in the public ledger to whom the burial places have already been allocated. For every death and in case of doubt, the current mayor will agree or disagree and make the final decision.
At the end of the concession period (eg, after 10 years), you have the option to extend/renew the concession period according to the terms and rates valid at that time. The municipality sets these periods and rates. You can extend/renew several times or transfer them from generation to generation.
You are eligible for municipal land (= free land)
Every village, town, or city is legally obliged to bury the deceased on its territory, regardless of their origin. This was originally intended for the less fortunate, foundlings, orphans, etc …
No purchase costs are payable for this municipal land because the municipality owns the land.

Yes, but your application will be processed by the Mayor and the Board of Aldermen of the relevant municipality. Only they can approve or reject this.
Municipal land is for a minimum and maximum duration of 10 years without extension possibilities.
